StarCraft Returns as an Open-World Shooter in 2030

September 15, 2026

Blizzard Entertainment has officially announced the return of StarCraft with a new open-world shooter, marking a major departure from the real-time strategy roots of the iconic sci-fi franchise. Revealed during BlizzCon 2026, the upcoming game is targeting a Spring 2030 release.

A New Chapter for StarCraft

The new project is being led by Dan Hay, the former creative director of the Far Cry series. Set in the Koprulu Sector, the game will take players into the StarCraft universe from a ground-level perspective, offering a new way to experience its factions, conflicts, and science-fiction setting.

Blizzard has described the project as an original open-world shooter rather than a traditional RTS. The announcement marks the franchise's return to the spotlight after more than a decade since the release of StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void.

First Cinematic Trailer Revealed

Alongside the announcement, Blizzard presented a first cinematic trailer showcasing the game's universe and its intense conflict against the Zerg. The video focuses on the human side of the war, featuring Terran forces facing the alien threat in a cinematic battle.

While the trailer offers a glimpse at the tone and setting, no gameplay has been shown yet. Blizzard has also kept further details about the protagonist, multiplayer features, and the full scope of the open world under wraps.

Release Date and Platforms

StarCraft is currently scheduled to launch in Spring 2030. Blizzard has not yet revealed a complete list of platforms or a specific release date.

The project represents the second major attempt to bring StarCraft into the shooter genre, following the canceled StarCraft: Ghost. Whether this new direction can satisfy longtime RTS fans remains to be seen, but the return of one of Blizzard's most beloved franchises is certainly one of the biggest announcements of BlizzCon 2026.
