🗣️ NPCs Can Detect Suspicious Behavior
Eavesdropping will be a more meaningful part of GTA 6. NPC conversations can reveal information and potentially lead to new activities or interactions, but civilians can also realize when Jason or Lucia are listening. Following someone for too long can make them suspicious and even cause them to confront the player.
NPCs can also initiate violence themselves, with some civilians carrying weapons. During combat, players can shoot weapons out of NPCs' hands or target specific limbs to incapacitate enemies without necessarily killing them.
Masks will also play a role in avoiding identification during crimes. Wearing one can prevent police from identifying Jason or Lucia through CCTV footage, while removing it afterward can help prevent them from being recognized.
🌴 Leonida Will React to the Time and Place
Rockstar says GTA 6 offers significantly more environmental interactivity than GTA 5 and even Red Dead Redemption 2, while avoiding excessive realism that could slow down the experience.
Traffic density will change depending on the time of day. During one preview, a relatively quiet street became much busier later, with Rob Nelson explaining that it was rush hour. Ordinary NPC conversations and behavior can also develop into unexpected situations without requiring a traditional mission marker.
Players can explore underwater shipwrecks while diving, with hidden treasure and other rewards waiting to be discovered.
❤️ Jason and Lucia Will Have Their Own Routines
Jason and Lucia can spontaneously suggest nearby activities or jobs to each other while exploring, meaning not every activity has to begin with a map icon. They can also hold hands on command, with the same interaction allowing them to hold doors open for one another.
Safe houses are designed more like the camps in Red Dead Redemption 2 than traditional GTA properties. Other characters can visit, while Jason and Lucia have their own routines when living there.
Character switching will also vary depending on the mission. Some missions allow players to switch freely between Jason and Lucia, while others restrict switching when Rockstar wants a particular character to lead a specific story moment.
⚙️ Rockstar Is Still Prioritizing Gameplay
Rockstar experimented with deeper life-simulation mechanics, including grocery shopping and manually restocking the refrigerator, but ultimately removed them because they slowed the game down too much.
Painkillers can quickly restore some health, but repeated use makes them less effective, encouraging players to use other recovery methods.
Jason and Lucia's physical appearances are also tied to their individual body types, so changes in weight and muscle will not make their bodies identical.
Rockstar created a dedicated production effort for pedestrian dialogue, with writers, directors, and producers specifically working on the conversations heard throughout Leonida. The story will also include slower sections between major action sequences, allowing the larger set pieces to stand out more.
