EA Sports has released a new deep dive trailer for NHL 27,
focusing on gameplay strategy and a major overhaul of the game's
presentation. The update introduces team-specific playbooks, a new
broadcast package, more authentic arenas and team-specific goal songs. The changes are designed to make individual matchups play
differently, with team tactics, arena atmosphere and presentation
elements adapting more closely to the teams involved.
💠32 teams, 32 playbooks
One of the biggest gameplay changes is the move from three shared global strategies to 32 team-specific playbooks. EA Sports says its design team used positional data from hundreds of real NHL games through NHL Edge to give each team an authentic tactical foundation.
The playbooks cover different phases of the game, including breakouts, neutral-zone movement, forechecking and power-play setups. Each team will therefore approach those situations differently, adding another strategic layer to every matchup.
For example, Tampa Bay's playbook has defensemen aggressively holding the blue line to sustain pressure, while behind-the-net setups create additional passing and attacking options. Against Colorado, players will instead have to deal with speed, puck movement and attacks that exploit open ice.
Players can also swap playbooks to suit their preferred style, roster or particular situations. A new whiteboard-style visualizer shows how each playbook influences team positioning by zone and game situation.
🤖 More responsive AI and changes to gameplay exploits
NHL 27 also features more cohesive teammate AI, with players reacting more dynamically as plays develop. Positioning is influenced by the location of the puck, available space, and the team's selected strategy.
EA Sports has also addressed community feedback around gameplay exploits such as L2LT pivots. Players using those movements will now have their speed dramatically reduced and will be much easier to knock off the puck.
📺 A new broadcast presentation
The commentary team for NHL 27 will feature John Buccigross on play-by-play alongside Darren Pang providing analysis.
The presentation package has also been completely overhauled to better match modern hockey broadcasts. The previous nine-second introductions are being replaced with new elements including goalie and team matchups, goal animations and intro transitions that reflect the situation on the ice.
Coaches will react to misplays, celebrations will better match the moment, and a new system called the Orchestrator will manage many of the presentation elements during games.
The Orchestrator tracks events both on and off the ice to determine which replays, reactions and graphics appear at each stoppage. EA Sports says the system is designed to make replays more varied and relevant while reducing repetitive presentation sequences.
ğŸŸï¸ Arena atmosphere gets a major update
NHL 27 also puts greater emphasis on the identity of each arena. EA Sports describes this approach as “hockey tourism,†with real-world landmarks, local music and other details giving venues their own personality.
Team-authentic goal songs will allow players to hear the music associated with each team when they score, while new crowd animations are designed to make fans react more closely to what is happening on the ice and the stakes of each game.
With distinct playbooks, different tactical matchups, and more individualized arena presentation, EA Sports is aiming to make teams and venues feel more distinctive from game to game.
