Thief: The Dark Project Remastered Announced for Winter Release

June 08, 2026

Nightdive Studios, Eidos-Montréal and Atari have announced Thief: The Dark Project Remastered, a modern revival of the 1998 stealth classic. Launching this Winter on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, PS4, and original Switch, the remaster uses Nightdive's KEX Engine and includes all content from the Thief Gold re-release.

Release Date and Platforms

Thief: The Dark Project Remastered arrives this Winter on:

  • PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4
  • Xbox Series X|S with Xbox Play Anywhere support
  • Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch (free upgrade from Switch to Switch 2 Edition)
  • PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG

No specific release month has been announced yet. The game includes the original Thief: The Dark Project plus the additional missions, content, and updates from the 1999 Thief Gold re-release.

Visual and Quality-of-Life Upgrades

Nightdive has carefully updated graphic textures, models, cutscenes, and animations while preserving the original's art direction. Modern improvements include:

  • A redesigned UI with a weapon and item wheel
  • A mission selector for easier level access
  • PC support for custom campaigns, allowing players to enjoy over 20 years of fan-made missions

Core Stealth Gameplay Returns

Considered a pioneer of "pure stealth," Thief rewards patience over combat. Key gameplay features from the original remain intact:

  • Advanced NPC AI with dynamic visibility and sound detection – guards investigate noises and raise alarms
  • Light and shadow as core mechanics: use fire arrows to extinguish torches or moss arrows to dampen loud floors
  • Non-lethal options like Garrett's blackjack for silent takedowns, plus gas mines and arrows for ranged stealth kills
  • Misdirection tools: flashbombs to blind enemies, noisemaker arrows to distract and lure guards
  • Classic thief tools: lockpicks, remote cameras, and rope arrows for reaching hidden areas

Players step into the boots of Garrett, a master thief caught in a web of conspiracy, using player agency to navigate the world on their own terms.

A Genre-Defining Legacy

Thief: The Dark Project won "Outstanding Achievement in Character or Story Development" at the 2000 Interactive Achievement Awards. Its influence can be seen across immersive sims and stealth games to this day. A full trailer is available now on YouTube, and more details can be found at atari.com.
